Award of Credit by Evaluation
Herkimer County Community College is committed to the idea that individuals deserve credit for college-level learning, no matter how it was acquired.
Prior Learning Assessment
When learning acquired through work or life experience is at the college level, it can be identified in an evaluative process designed for students to demonstrate by examination, license, portfolio, essay, etc. (at the discretion of the evaluator) that their knowledge or competence is worthy of college credit. Please note that courses taken through non-accredited institutions, businesses, or alternative credit providers such as Sophia Learning, Straighterline, and Study.com may be required to go through the PLA process to be considered for credit.
Please note that there is a $150 non-refundable fee associated with the prior learning assessment process. This charge is applied regardless of whether or not credit is awarded at the conclusion of the evaluation.

Credit for Prior Learning
HCCC also accepts prior learning credit that has been evaluated by the following organizations:

: If a training program or experience is listed in the ACE National Guide, students may submit their official for evaluation.

: Students must provide transcript or official student record from the organization offering the course(s).

: Official must be submitted for evaluation.
- Military Service: Military veterans may have earned credit for Physical Education and should submit a copy of their DD-214.
- : The College recognizes credit for Advanced Placement Examinations of the College Entrance Examination Board for college level courses taken by students while still attending high school. Advanced Placement scores of 5, 4, and 3 will earn the student applicable college credit for the corresponding courses required for a degree or certificate at HCCC.

: The College participates in the College Level Examination Program of the College Entrance Examination Board and will grant course credits to students who pass CLEP examinations consistent with the offerings of the College.
- : The College has determined that students successfully completing ACT-PEP: Regents College Examinations may be eligible for course credits consistent with the offerings of the College.
